Across the country, high school seasons and careers are coming to an end with regular season games over and the playoffs narrowing down the field week by week. One stellar career that came to an end, leaving a large shadow in his path, was that of Class of 2017 running back Chance Fisher.

Fisher had a dynamic career for the Skeeters being a proven play making commodity for head coach Robbie Robinson. Since his sophomore season in 2014, Fisher was the go-to guy for Mesquite High School on offense coming up with 942 yards on the ground with nine scores while hauling in 18 passes for 170 more yards with two additional scores. The following season Fisher was fully integrated into the offense carrying the rock 152 times for 1,267 yards with 17 touchdowns. His all-purpose role grew with 25 receptions covering 305 yards adding two more touchdowns on the board. He also had nine kickoffs returned for 410 yards taking two back to the house.

The 5-10, 180 pound, speedster had another All-Conference kind of season in 2016 proving to be a workhorse against Texas 6A competition with 189 carries for 1,367 yards with 13 scores. He added 43 receptions for another 586 yards with another four scores and even converted two two-point tries. Opposing coaches knew better than to allow Fisher to show off his 4.4 speed on special teams, but somehow Fisher still got a few attempts here and there enhancing his team’s field position along the way. Fisher had five kick returns off squibs for 81 yards but took back 10 punts for 155 yards breaking off a 65-yard return along the way.

The Skeeters have had troubles putting victories on the board over the past two seasons ending 2015 with a 5-5 record and in 2016 going 3-7. Perhaps the win-loss record has wrongly influenced college coaches negatively about the talent in Mesquite? A few offers have come in for Fisher, but not as many as one would assume. Air Force, McNeese State, Northwestern State, Kentucky Christian, Northern Iowa, and Army have each extended offers.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with Fisher getting some highlights from his season and an update about his recruiting process.

Interview

Chance, how did the 2016 season go overall for you?

“Personally it went pretty good. As a team we started out good at 2-0, everything started to go downhill after that. I still had fun playing the game I love.”

What is your proudest accomplishment on the field?

“My proudest accomplishment this year came against Lee (Tyler). We were their homecoming game. We were going back and forth all game. I scored in the first half, but I felt like I was not doing enough to contribute in the second half. They tried to stop our pass game allowing me opportunities to gain yards on the ground. I ended up with five touchdowns in that game. We were down by a touchdown in the fourth quarter. I ran a wheel route, caught it and scored (won 57-56).”

*Fisher had 210 yards rushing off 21 carries with four touchdowns and pulled in six passes for 88 yards with another touchdown vs. Lee.

Do you know if you have received any postseason honors?

“Yes, sir. I was named first team All-District and team Special Teams Player of the Year. I was named the MVP of my school. They said I was the first person at my school to earn MVP honors three years in a row.”

That’s awesome. Congratulations.

“Thank you.”

What are you working on already in the off-season?

“Right now we are in the weight room getting toned up. I’m working on getting in better shape and getting bigger.”

What are your off-season goals?

“Before I got to college I would like to get to 200 pounds. That’s my goal. I want to max out on bench at around 300 pounds.”

Are you participating in any spring sports at Mesquite?

“I’m still debating on whether I am running track or not. That would be the only sport I would do.”

Which events would you compete in track if you do participate?

“The open 100, open 200, and probably the 400 because of the competition level. The 400 tests your manhood.”

Which schools do you have visits set up with so far?

“Incarnate Word – that is an unofficial. I’m supposed to visit Northwestern State and Northern Colorado in January.”

What is your cumulative GPA?

“3.28.”

For fun, which college football teams do you have in the championship game?

“Right now I cannot see anyone beating Alabama. I would love to see Oklahoma get in there and do what they do at some point.”

Which bowl games are you excited to see this postseason?

“OU (Oklahoma), Michigan, I like watching North Carolina and Stanford. I will definitely catch all of those games.”

Chance, thanks for your time today. Good luck with your upcoming visits.

“Thank you.”
