Cayden Fortson had a breakout season in 2020 and is quickly making a name for himself as one of the young stars in the Lone Star State. During his sophomore season, the 6’0″, 170-pound, defensive back had 82 total tackles, eight pass breakups, and three interceptions as opponents only threw to his side of the field seven times. Fortson also made plays on offense for Sabine as he 175 receiving yards and blocked two field goals on special teams.

This young playmaker spent time at both cornerback and safety and utilizes his great vision, tackling ability, and athleticism all over the secondary. Cayden also plays with great intensity and is a great leader on the field.

College programs are already dropping offers to this Class of 2023 recruit with five going out from teams like Kansas and Oklahoma State. Fortson is also drawing interest from top programs such as Texas A&M and Nebraska.

In an exclusive Recruiting News Guru interview, I caught up with this young phenom to talk about his sophomore season and get an update on his recruiting process.

Interview

Cayden, how would you grade your performance during your sophomore season?
I believe I had a solid sophomore season. Although I’m a true cornerback, I played safety as well depending on the teams we were playing against.

What would you say was your best game and why?
The game against Spring Hill, because I was contributing in all phases of the game and we won.

What are your strengths on the football field?
My great vision, tackling, and being an in-game leader.

How would you describe what kind of player you are?
True shut down cornerback, but I can also transition that same mentality to safety. I will shut down half of the field no matter where I’m lined up.

How would you describe what kind of teammate you are?
A leader and will line up anywhere I can put the team in the best position to be successful.

What kind of defensive scheme does Sabine run?
Cover 4 mainly.

How do your skills fit into this scheme?
They fit naturally, but it’s also based on what type of scheme the opponent is running.

Is there an NFL player that you try to model your game after?
Jalen Ramsey.

What is your fastest 40-yard dash time?
4.55 – verified.

What do you like most about playing at Sabine?
The community and the support they show for the program.

Do you play any other sports in high school?
Track.

What is your favorite subject in school?
Math.

What is your GPA?
4.2.

What are your goals for the offseason?
I’m not playing basketball for the first time because I’m already getting ready for the winter/spring 7on7. I’m in the weight room daily and getting defensive back training to sharpen my skills for next year.

How many college offers do you have and from what schools?
Five; Illinois State, Baylor, Kansas, Oklahoma State, and Mississippi State.

Are you receiving interest from any schools that haven’t offered you yet?
Texas A&M, SMU, and Nebraska.

Do you have a favorite quote or Bible verse?
A minor setback means a major comeback.

Thank you for your time today.
Thank you, sir.
