Michael Light is again leading the charge for Bishop Lynch in 2020 as the senior quarterback looks to end his high school career battling for a state championship. During his junior season, Light threw for 960 yards and 14 touchdowns while rushing for 180 yards and five more scores. The Friars (0-2) are back at it on Friday nights taking on top TAPPS competition in one of Texas’ toughest divisions with their three-star recruit (QB Hit List) focused on the ultimate team goal.

When the rush is on, Light has the ability to stay calm and collected while facing pressure in the pocket. Keeping defenses honest, he also has the athleticism to gain yards on the ground keeping the chains moving downfield. With time in the pocket, the 6-0, 175-pound, field general has good footwork and the arm strength making all the throws required to execute the Friars’ offense. The abilities Light brings to the game has brought several college offers from teams like West Virginia State while drawing interest from numerous other schools including Central Arkansas.

In an exclusive Recruiting News Guru interview, Michael elaborates on his high school career at Bishop Lynch and gives us an update on his recruiting process.

Interview

Michael, how would you grade your individual performance so far in 2020?

I’d be lying if I said that I felt it was a great grade. I feel like I’m working my tail off but I can’t be happy with my individual accomplishments when my team goals aren’t being met. So, I would have to say I’m doing well but there is a lot of room to improve.

What are your strengths on the football field?

My strength on the field is my ability to keep plays alive when most people can’t. My eyes are always downfield looking to make plays out of nothing, that is why I feel I’m different than most quarterbacks.

What kind of offense does Bishop Lynch run?

We are running a Spread offense this year, kind of like an Air Raid style.

How do your skills translate to this offense?

My skills translate well for this offense. I think it is one of the best offenses possible to utilize my abilities.

What area of your game have you seen the most improvement in since the start of the off-season?

I would have to say just being more relaxed and collected in the game. Last year was my first year on varsity and I feel I got overwhelmed in certain situations. This year I’m cool and collected and always ready for the next move.

What has been the most memorable moment of your high school career?

I would have to say my most memorable moment in high school football would have to be last year against Ennis. We were down a lot going into the half and seconds before halftime. I threw about a 55-yard touchdown to my wide receiver, Anthony Dibiase, and it sparked a change in momentum. We ended coming back and winning the game in the second half.

Would you consider yourself a dual-threat or pro-style quarterback?

I’d definitely consider myself a dual-threat because of my ability to extend the play. My running ability is very underestimated but it is there when I want to use it.

Is there an NFL quarterback that you try to model your game after?

Russell Wilson and Drew Brees. Both are under size guys who proved size doesn’t matter and that you just have to ball out.

Were you able to attend any camps this offseason?

I had a few camps I was scheduled to attend but they got canceled so I ended up visiting West Virginia State and Concord University. I was able to see those schools and meet their coaching staffs.

What do you like most about playing at Bishop Lynch?

I would have to say the brotherhood. I came in my freshmen year from a public school and didn’t know a single kid in the whole school. The football players took me in as their own, and this senior class has a bond like no other.

Who has had the biggest impact on your football career?

I would definitely say the people who have had the biggest impact on my football career are my parents. They push me to be the best I can be in every aspect of life.

What game left on the schedule are you most looking forward to playing?

I would have to say Nolan Catholic. It’s always a close good game.

What are your goals for the rest of your senior season?

My biggest goal for this season is just to go to a state championship. That’s the end goal for every player. As well as just enjoy every second I have left playing with these guys because it’s here today and gone tomorrow. I know I’m going to miss it.

Do you have any college offers?

Yes, I have offers from Trine University, Community Christian (JUCO), Carthage University, West Virginia State University, Graceland University, Puget Sound University, and Mount Marty University.

What other schools are showing interest in you?

I’ve got some interest from Central Arkansas, Morehead State, Valparaiso, West Florida, Harding University, Eastern New Mexico, West Virginia Wesleyan, St. Anselm, and some more.

What is your GPA?

Before senior year started it was at a 3.12 and it will surely be going up this semester.

Do you have a favorite quote or Bible verse?

Yes. Colossians 3:23, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”— I like this verse because we tend to do things for the wrong reasons. At the end of the day we should be doing what we do for the Lord and glorifying him in every way we can.

Thank you for your time and good luck the rest of your senior season.

Thank you, sir.
