Tim Adkins, a junior offensive tackle at McNeil High School in Austin, has a proud football heritage in his family as his grandfather, Ernie Holmes, was part of the legendary Steel Curtain defense that won two Super Bowls as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now, this 6-2, 280-pound, junior offensive lineman is trying to make his mark in the world of football following in the family footsteps.

Adkins, a Class of 2021 prospect, already has one college offer from Air Force and is drawing interest from numerous in-state colleges including Texas Tech after earning first team 6A Texas All-District honors. Adkins is not only a star on the football field but also in the weight room and in the classroom where he has 3.5 GPA.

In 2020, Adkins has goals of being a great leader helping take his Mavericks squad back to the playoffs after a 12-year hiatus.

In an exclusive Recruiting News Guru interview, I sat down with Adkins to discuss his junior season at McNeil and his recruiting process.

Interview

Tim, first off, what are your thoughts on your junior season?

“My junior season was a lot of fun. I had no back up at left tackle so I got a lot of playing time which was great. It was my first varsity season so I know I can improve a lot.”

What are your thoughts on your individual performance in 2019?

“I thought I did okay. We get performance reports for every game and I’d always get the best out of all the offensive lineman, but I could’ve been more dominant on the field.”

What are your strengths on the football field?

“My strengths on the field are my quickness and my long arms. I’d be lined up against 6-5 and 6-6 dudes but my arms let my get to them first and assert the play.”

Did you receive any individual honors?

“First team All-District and Offensive Lineman of the Year.”

What was your most memorable moment?

“My most memorable moment was playing and beating Stony Point, as our season hadn’t been going that well. But our team was able to clutch up and beat a team that we were supposed to lose to.”

What are you working on most this offseason?

“This offseason I’m working most on getting faster. I think speed kills so the faster I am the better for the team.”

Do you have any college offers?

“Yes. I got my first offer last Wednesday from Air Force.”

Are there any other schools showing you interest?

“Texas Tech.”

What is your max bench and max squat in the weight room?

“My max bench is 285 and my max squat is 465.”

Is there a current football player that you try to model your game after?

“Aaron Donald (Rams). He is relentless on the defensive line and even when three guys are blocking him he’s still fighting to make a play.”

What is your GPA?

“3.5.”

What do you want to study in college?

“Communications and Marketing.”

Who has had the biggest impact on your football career?

“My grandfather, Ernie Holmes. He was on the Steel Curtain defense and won two Super Bowls with the Steelers. He inspires me to keep pushing because if someone I know can be great why can’t I.”

What do you like most about playing at McNeil?

“Playing at McNeil and being the underdogs is great because people don’t expect much from us. But this season we are going to turn it around and get into the playoffs after a 12-year hiatus. The best thing is the doubters that keep us motivated to keep grinding.”

Thank you for your time and good luck in your senior season.

“Thank you, sir.”
