Oklahoma may not have guys like 5-star recruits defensive back Shaun Wade and offensive lineman Josh Myers committed to their class like Ohio State does, at least for now, but what the Sooners have put together so far is a fantastic collection of talent for the 2017 class that maybe the best in the nation thus far. The group added another standout talent on Thursday with a verbal commitment from 3-star California tight end Grant Calcaterra.

Calcaterra was part of a one-two punch for Santa Margarita Catholic with Class of 2016 4-star quarterback K.J. Costello (Stanford) last season. Costello threw for 2,347 yards with 18 touchdowns connecting with his tight end/inside-outside receiver Calcaterra on 48 passes for a team-high 926 yards with another team-high nine touchdowns.

The Rancho Santa Margarita area talent was pushing 20 scholarship offers by the time he committed to the Sooners. Teams like Texas A&M, Utah, Nebraska, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Hawaii, Northwestern, Boston College, and Florida all sought his services at the next level.

Calcaterra posted his commitment on Twitter writing, “First off I would like to thank everyone who has believed in me throughout this process. I want to thank my family, friends, coaches, and teammates for their much needed support. I want to thank the college coaches who have invested their time and given me the opportunity to play for their schools. After much discussion with my family, I would like to further my academic and athletic career and commit to The University of Oklahoma. Boomer Sooner.”

Oklahoma now has 12 verbal commitments to their 2017 class with nine of them considered 4-star prospects. The group is highlighted by offensive lineman Tyrese Robinson, linebacker Levi Draper, defensive back Trajan Bandy, and quarterback Chris Robinson.
