It doesn’t matter which recruiting service one uses, Jontae Gilbert is one of the nation’s best regardless of position. The elite athlete shined on both sides of the ball for Douglas High School (Atlanta) throughout the 2023 season earning Georgia All-State honors. College teams have laid down 26 offers with the four-star prospect narrowing in on three with a possible commitment looming.

Not resting on his accomplishments to date, Gilbert is putting in the work this offseason.

“The offseason is going good for me,” Gilbert said. “I am still working on my craft. I am running track and getting faster. The key point is getting faster and more explosive. I am working on man coverage and breaking.”

Along the recruiting trail, three teams are getting the lion’s share of Gilbert’s attention.

“Coach Donte Williams (DB – Georgia), he and coach Kirby (Smart), South Carolina, and coach (Mike) Reed (CB) from Clemson – those three right there,” Gilbert stated.

Asked if those programs were his unofficial top three, Gilbert replied, “Yes, those three out of my top five.”

Gilbert gave insight into what he likes about each program.

Georgia: “Right now, Georgia, if you want to go there you have to compete. You have to compete and work; they are on me hard.”

South Carolina: “I love going there. I feel at home there; I get it from the coaches. I love them guys. We have a great relationship. They see me balling at every position in the backend, that is good.”

Clemson: “I feel like I can fit in coach (Wes) Goodwin’s (DC) defense. They love me. They love my size at safety, and they think I can play nickelback too.”

A commitment could be around the corner, or the four-star defender could wait until this summer.

“I’m going to wait to take my officials, but I may commit before then,” Gilbert said. “I am taking some trips first.”

There are a trio of possible visits coming up, one this weekend.

“This weekend I am going to Georgia, next weekend is Tennessee, and after that is South Carolina,” Gilbert shared. “I’m either going to Battle Miami (7-on-7 tournament) or to South Carolina.”
