The state of Georgia is long known for producing great running backs and yet another one maybe coming around the bend in Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy’s Trevor Gear. Gear has been a difference maker on the field over his first two seasons on the high school level. In 2014 as a sophomore, Gear helped lead the Chargers to a Class A state championship after the team started off 0-6 but finished 7-7 after he missed the first six games of the season.

The Chargers (McDonough) are back at it again this year with a 10-3 record and an opportunity to secure a second consecutive Georgia state championship after beating Prince Avenue Christian 35-14 on Dec. 4. Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy will have to go through a tough 12-1 Aquinas (Augusta) team lead by another potential up-and-coming running back, sophomore D’Angelo Durham (1,284 yards – 17 touchdowns) to get the hardware. The Chargers may have one variable in their favor, the lone team that beat Aquinas 42-12, Prince Avenue Christian, Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy just crushed to get into the championship game.

On the field, Gear has been the proverbial money in the bank for the Chargers since his sophomore season. In 2014, the 6’0”, 200 pound, athlete rushed for 800 yards in seven games adding another 105 yards receiving with 12 total touchdowns. The Class of 2017 recruit is well over 1,400 yards rushing this season and a regular in the end zone.

Colleges are starting to notice Gear’s undeniable abilities with recent unofficial visits to the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech. All the attention is about to kick up a notch as college coaches make their rounds securing Class of 2016 recruits while checking out the next crop of talent ready to make their mark during their senior campaigns. In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I caught up with Trevor to talk about his recent visits and his thoughts on the Chargers’ upcoming championship game.

Interview

Trevor, the Chargers just swept past Prince Avenue Christian into the championship game. How did the game play out for you guys?

“At first, they scored on the second play. It was 7-0 fast. The first couple of series we were not clicking on offense. Our defense got a couple of stops and then we started going on offense.”

How well did you do?

“I think I had two receptions for 40 yards, and I think I had 140 yards rushing off 17 carries.”

Off to the state championship game.

“Yeah, we are playing Aquinas out of Augusta.”

Do you know much about Aquinas yet?

“I’ve never seen them play before. We’ll start watching film this week and get ready.”

Do you know anything about them from local newspapers or via the grapevine?

“I just know they are good.”

Switching gears, you recently visited Georgia. Which game did you head to Athens to see?

“The Georgia Southern game.”

How did the visit go for you?

“It was good. We got to Athens and then got on the bus. We ate and the coaches talked to me for a while. We chilled for a couple of hours and then the busses took us to the game. We did the Dawg walk. That was pretty cool.”

What did you talk to the coaches about?

“They asked about my season. They said they’re going to come down and visit soon.”

You also went to Georgia Tech recently, how did that visit go?

“It was good, but they lost to Georgia. The trip was basically the same thing as my Georgia visit. I live about 30 minutes away from Atlanta. I talked to Coach (Joe) Speed, their defensive backs coach. After eating we went to the game.”

What did the Georgia Tech coaches talk about with you?

“Coach Speed said, “Keep having a good season.” He said they have been wanting to come see me play but have been too busy to come down. They said they would keep in contact with me.”

Do you have any other visits coming up?

“I’m going to try to go to Indiana (Hoosiers) for a visit. I’m planning on going for a basketball game.”

That would be fun.

“Should be.”

Have any of the local papers started distributing their all-state teams yet and if so are you on any of the teams?

“I earned All-Region first-team for Private 1A.”

Congratulations on earning All-Region first-team honors. Good luck in the championship game this weekend.

“Thank you.”
