A five-game blessing of a season has been bestowed upon California high school football programs, one that players at all grade classifications need. For junior tight end Tywon Mitchell, he is not letting the opportunity to get valuable game reps slip through his fingertips. Much like his Stickum for hands, the St. Anthony’s standout is latching onto the moment improving upon his run blocking and receiving connections with each, and the play is drawing a collegiate crowd.

With two games in the books, the 6-3, 238-pound, target has secured six passes for 50 yards in the Saints run-heavy attack. For an update on his season, he stopped by the RNG Clubhouse for another one-on-one.

Interview

Tywon, we’ve talked a few times over the offseason… how does it feel to be back on the field in the pads getting after teams with your brothers?

It feels good. It feels really good being out there with my brothers. We’ve been off the field for over a year, it feels really good.

Let’s update the readers, what offensive set are the Saints running this season?

We are currently running a one tight end set with three receivers. We can flex it to a Spread and we also have a two tight end set.

With the work put in, where are you showing the improvements with your blocking both on the line and in space?

I feel like, after working this offseason, I am better at making the contact on the block and sustaining it. I was making the contact, but not keeping locked on. Doing so, that opens a lot of lanes for our running back to score.

How are they utilizing your skills as a receiving target?

My routes they are utilizing me on are on hitches and outs. They are trying to use my big body frame for first downs.

Where are you seeing the improvements with your skills as a receiving threat?

I feel like I am breaking down at the top of my route better and my explosion out of the route when I break has improved a lot. My explosion overall has improved. The catch will always be there; I have hands.

Love it. You guys are off to a 2-0 record, how is the team looking overall?

We are looking really good; a lot of people brought in. Our chemistry is truly there. We have come together. We will do really well the rest of this season and next season.

Who do you guys get next?

We are playing Harvard Westlake on Saturday.

Where is the game?

We are playing over there.

What are you expecting from their defense?

I am expecting a 3-4. They have a lot of good skill players. Their linebackers are shifty, but I do not see a problem there.

How many games do the Saints have left?

We have three more games.

What are you goals for the remainder of the season?

Hopefully to show more diversity in my routes, more YAC (yards after the catch), and I am obviously trying to score.

Let’s close talking about recruiting. Which programs are watching you?

I am receiving a lot of interest are Fresno State, Boise State, Eastern Washington, Idaho, St. Francis, and Yale. I’d like to add something about recruiting; my dad always tells me, your first offer is like your first girlfriend, they will be with you to the end.

Tywon, it is always great getting time with you. Wishing you and the Saints success the rest of the way. Keep us update.

Yes, sir. Thank you.
