During the 2017 season, Javian “JJ” Hester was that unstoppable force for Booker T. Washington High School helping the Hornets to a 6A Oklahoma state title. The Hornets posted a 12-1 season with a trophy capturing championship win over Bixby with their 6-2, 175-pound, receiver hauling in 38 passes for 705 yards with six trips into the end zone. On defense, Hester had 19 solo tackles, two tackles for a loss, forced a fumble, and picked off four passes. All the time put in has pushed Hester atop the recruiting rankings among his peer group and has a host of college football programs taking notice.

It might be unfair to lay too high of expectations upon Hester’s shoulders during his junior season, but high hopes are there to see the Hornets win another state title with their four-star standout helping lead the way. Hester has pulled in offers from Arkansas, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Michigan, Nebraska, and Iowa State with teams like Clemson, Iowa State, Ole Miss, and Florida State, among others, showing interest. All adds up to another big season for Hester.

In a Recruiting News Guru catch-up interview, I sat down with Hester after the Hornets opening game against North Little Rock High School (AR) for an update on his offseason progress with a recruiting update.

Interview

JJ, the Hornets traveled to Bentonville to take on one of the top teams in the nation a year ago in North Little Rock High School. I know the outcome was not what you guys wanted, but the 29-28 final score suggests it was one heck of a game. For those not there, what were some of the main parts of the game?

“In the second half we came together. We started rolling then but we came out too slow to start the game. It was a great game, but very tiring.”

You guys turned it on in the second half scoring all 28 of your points, what was working well for the Hornets offense in the second half?

“Everyone was coming together. This was our first game, I think some of the guys had jitters. Once we calmed down we started flowing. The passing game worked well for us.”

How did the game go for you?

“It was alright. I was coming off the flu. I did well, but I could have done better. I missed some tackles, but that will not happen again.”

Where are you seeing the biggest improvements in your game as a receiver?

“I don’t know yet, I don’t feel like I have been able to use my skills yet. We will see this Friday.”

During fall camp with the Hornets, where did you see signs of your skillset improving?

“During camp, my route running and my speed has become a lot better.”

Last we spoke you were planning on getting time in at safety as well, did you play in the secondary against North Little Rock? You mentioned the missed tackles.

“Yes.”

How did it go for you?

“It went well. I am not used to being in the box. I am used to guarding receivers. With tackling their backs, I could have done better.”

In Week 2, you guys get Bishop Kelley (Tulsa), what kind of game are you expecting from them?

“We are expecting a good-hard fought game. They are a well-coached team. They will come out with everything they have.”

Are there any other games on the schedule you have circled as a big game?

“No. I take each game one by one. I am not worrying about any other games.”

What personal goals have you set for your junior season?

“On offense, I want 1,500 yards, no drops, with 15-plus touchdowns. I have not set any goals on defense yet.”

Which schools are showing interest in you going into the season?

“Florida State, Washington, Oklahoma State – definitely, Ole Miss – a little bit, and Florida – they sent me a letter the other day.”

Did you take any unofficial summer visits?

“Yes. I went to Florida State.”

How did the FSU visit go?

“It was nice. I loved everything about it. Their facilities and campus was so nice.”

Do you have any visits planned for this fall?

“No, not right now.”

In regards to the recruiting process, what are some of the aspects you like about it?

“That is a tough one – I do love being recruited. I like talking to the coaches and learning more about the game.”

JJ, thanks for your time today and good luck with the rest of your season.

“Thank you.”
