Interview

Cory, how have the offseason workouts gone for you so far?

They are going great, man. I am seeing progress, most definitely. Playing 7v7, our early morning lifts, going on the track, and practicing on the field, it is going great.

With the Cougars, where all will you be playing during the 2021 season?

At a every defensive back position and I will play a little bit of receiver too.

All the defensive back positions?

Yes, I am playing corner, free safety, strong safety, and nickel.

Given all that you will be doing, for your role on defense what have you been doing to prepare?

At school we do strength and conditioning in the morning, I have my Texas Team Fury workouts, and Coach Grant has a professional workout too. He has me doing the SuperCat.

The SuperCat, what is that?

It is a machine that you can hook up to your hands and legs. It works off resistance, helps you coming out of your breaks, and improves your footwork. We work on the VertiMax too; we have all kinds of stuff.

Let’s get back on track. For offense, what have you been working on with your technique and fundamentals?

I have been doing a lot of reps, grinding every day. I am working with the receivers and defensive backs. Every day I am getting up here early to get the reps in and I am working with Coach Grant at Fury; that helps me overall in all aspects.

Playing receiver, how is that helping you as a defensive back?

It is helping me read the quarterback. Even playing with my quarterback, he shows me stuff QBs do to help me. At DB, I am looking at the same things; a slight turn of the shoulder, that is a deep ball. A big turn, he’s throwing an out route. Playing receiver, they don’t throw to you every play but you have to run your route no matter what; that is great conditioning.

You touched on this a minute ago, going deeper. To bring more speed and athleticism to your game, what are some of the drills and exercises that you’ve been doing?

Ladder drills, the VertiMax and SuperCat, and the “W” drill working on my backpedal – all kinds of stuff. Cone drills and stuff like that.

Playing 7v7 with Texas Fury, going up against top competition, where are you seeing the biggest growth in your skills on both sides of the ball?

Man, with Coach Grant and Team Fury we are playing against top players. I had to compete or someone will put me on a highlight reel. You don’t want to be on someone’s highlight reel. They are really helping me cover. Looking back at last year’s film, I messed up. But as I learn, I will never mess up on that play again.

This summer, have you been to any college camps?

Yes, sir. I went to a SMU camp, HBU (Houston Baptist), LSU and I am looking forward going to more before the season starts.

The LSU camp, how did that go?

Man, that was the best camp I have been to. It went well. I met a lot of coaches there and saw a lot of college players.

At the LSU camp, what were you able to showcase of your skills in front of all the college coaches?

In the drills, at the camps I play DB, I gave it 100 percent. You have to stand out and make a play, that is what I did. I went 100 percent on drills and during the one on ones I made plays.

Did you lay down a 40-yard dash time at any of the camps?

Yes, I ran a 4.4 at the HBU camp.

Wow. That is impressive.

Thank you.

Do you also compete in track at Nimitz?

Yes, sir.

Which events?

This year I did field events like long, triple, and high jump.

Nice. Cory, it was great getting time in with you today. Wishing you the best of luck preparing for the upcoming season and with any other college camps you may attend.

Yes, sir. Thank you.
