The college game has always placed a heavy burden upon the respective shoulders of quarterbacks. In the early days a quarterback needed to play the position like a running back with the occasional pass but over time it morphed to a position that moved the chains with a strong arm and accurate throws with mobility being a sidestep against the rush. The game has changed in recent years putting a bigger emphasis in the pocket on a playmaker who can run the pigskin and sling it around the yard. One of the best at his position in the 2018 class but overlooked by most college programs is Chance Amie.

Amie has been one of those standout players on a team that has scratched and clawed their way through games but have ended up on the short end of the stick more times than not. Robert E. Lee finished the 2015 schedule with a posted 5-4 record (MaxPreps) but racked up 428 points in those nine games with Amie leading the way. The Raiders fought through a 2-8 campaign in 2016 but once again lit up the scoreboard with 342 points accounted in 10 games. Exact stats for Amie have not been released but the rough stats had him passing for 1,556 yards with 10 scores and rushing for 1,256 yards with 17 additional trips to the end zone off 183 totes.

Game film on the 6-4, 200 pound, rising star tells it all, he runs like a tailback and throws like a four-star prospect. With a flick of the wrist, the ball is on the money 40 yards down field. An opening along the defensive front and Amie has blistered another Texas 6A defense.

The 2016 first team All-District performer has attracted plenty of reported interest with teams like Cal, Houston, Louisiana Tech, Arkansas State, North Texas, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Penn State, Texas, and Texas-San Antonio putting him somewhere on their recruiting board. Early offers have come in from Bowling Green and Iowa State. With the off-season exposure camps ramping up, expect more interest to build and the offers to start rolling in for Amie.

In a one-on-one interview with Amie, I sat down with one of the rising talents in the Lone Star State covering his game on the field, off-season plans, and recruitment to date.

Interview

Chance, how did your game improve during your junior season?

“Things became simple to me on the field. The game got a lot slower. I don’t think one person ever took me down running the ball. The routine throws are second nature to me now. Making good plays were not hard with my experience.”

What type of offense does the Raiders run?

“We have a mixed offense but we run the Spread mainly.”

What are you working on this off-season?

“My throwing motion. I’m working on being more consistent and with better accuracy. I’m working on my speed and weight too.”

Are you working with a quarterback coach this off-season?

“I am. I am working with Kevin Murray every two weeks.”

How do the Raiders look heading into the 2017 season?

“We don’t have that much depth. We have depth on offense at running back but we don’t have our positions set yet. We have some defensive players coming back but overall we have to build our team back up.”

Have you taken any unofficial visits yet?

“Yes, sir. I went on a visit to Houston. Coach (Major) Applewhite (head coach) and Coach (Brian) Johnson (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach) talk to me often.”

Which other schools are showing recruiting interest in you?

“Texas, Baylor, TCU, and Syracuse are showing interest. Syracuse has recently started showing interest in me. They want me to come to New York for a visit.”

Which schools do you have offers from so far?

“Bowling Green and Iowa State.”

Do you have any plans to visit those schools coming up?

“Yes, sir. I’m going to Iowa State this spring. My sister lives in Michigan. I want to go visit her and then travel over to Bowling Green to visit the campus then.”

Do you have any other visits planned?

“Yes, sir. I’m visiting Baylor this weekend (Feb. 18) and Texas on Feb. 25.”

What has you excited about visiting Baylor?

“The coaching staff has NFL experience. That is cool to me.”

What has you excited about visiting the Longhorns?

“They have been showing love for a while. It is always fun going to Austin. The coaches all know me there.”

Do you know which camps you might attend this off-season?

“I’m going to an Under Armour All-American camp, Rivals, and the Nike Opening in Dallas.”

What is your cumulative GPA?

“I have a 3.61.”

Have you taken the ACT or SAT yet?

“I take both this month.”

What is your favorite subject in school?

“U.S. History.”

Are you playing any other sports for Lee?

“We have our last basketball game today (Tuesday). I’m also running track.”

How did the basketball season go?

“It was pretty good individually.”

Which events are you running in track?

“The 4×1 and 4×2.”

Last question, what is your favorite part about playing football?

“I have a passion for the game. No one can take that passion from me.”

Chance, thanks for your time today and good luck with your visit to Baylor this weekend.

“Thank you.”
